❓ FAQ
What data is used?
This tool uses real elevation data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and the LOLA instrument. Every crater, mare, and highland is in its real position.
What printer do I need?
Any FDM 3D printer works. The key is to use white or translucent filament so light passes through the thin areas.
How does a lithophane moon lamp work?
Wall thickness varies across the surface. When lit from inside, thin areas (lunar mares) glow while thick areas (highlands, crater rims) stay dark — recreating the look of the moon.
Can I use it commercially?
Yes! NASA data is public domain. You can sell the printed lamps. Many Etsy sellers do this.
What LED base should I use?
Search for '3D moon lamp base' on Amazon. Look for a 15-16cm wooden base with warm white LED and USB charging.
